Grade 2J currently has 19 students representing 12 different nationalities. Mr. James their teacher, is from the UK in his first year working full time at HIS. He is extremely excited to be teaching Grade 2 this year. He has a full time teacher assistant, Ms. Thu has been teaching at HIS for several years. Between them Mr. James and Ms. Thu aim to foster a warm and safe but challenging classroom environment.
The students build on the skills they acquired in Grade 1 as they develop into independent learners. The learn to take more control of their own personal organisation both inside and outside the classroom. In Grade 2 they begin to use the learner profile attributes to become role models for the younger children in the lower elementary. We promote the students to be principled, caring, open minded communicators who can independently solve problems. The units are shared with Grade 1 and are designed to encourage learners to be more responsible individuals and to take on various roles.
The students have a range of specialist subjects; Vietnamese, Arts, Physical Education and Music. In Grade 2 EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners join pull-out classes and are given extra learning support (ELS) to bridge the challenges on learning a new language. The class enjoys many activities that encourage pair work, group work and individual tasks. The classroom is located at the 3rd floor, room 3.3. The classroom has different learning stations to promote inquiry, ICT, reading and math. The students are encouraged to make good choices about their learning through the Daily 5 which also helps to develop their English language skills. Visible thinking, differentiation and experiential learning are some of the highlights of this level. The class practices enthusiasm, caring, respect, co-operation and appreciation to encourage a healthy class environment.
