International Schools Assessment (ISA’s)

Dear Parents,

The International Schools’ Assessment at HIS

One of the most important questions for parents is always, “How is my child doing?’  The International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) is designed to provide schools with an external form of assessment.  A growing number of international schools now use ISA.

What is ISA?

It is an annual assessment programme that has been developed to measure skills in mathematical literacy, reading and writing of students in international schools.

ISA is based on the internationally endorsed reading and mathematical literacy frameworks of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) developed by the organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.  It is designed and developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).

The ISA report provides descriptive information about what students know and can do.  The results are equated from year to year so they can be used to track changes over time at individual and school level.

ISA is not a competitive or comparative test.  It is not a test that students “pass.”  It will not be used for purposes other than providing data to our school and to you and your child.

How does the assessment work?

Students complete a reading literacy test, a mathematical literacy test and two writing tests, each of which takes between 45 minutes and one hour to administer.  The test includes both multiple choice and open-ended tasks, the tests will be done over 2 days.

When will HIS do the iSA’s?

On September 22nd and 23rd students from Grade 3 and Grade 5 will take part in the ISA’s. They will take place in the classrooms. We encourage all students to take part, in order for us to get a true reflection of our school.  However, the test will be modified for some students with limited English.

If you have any further questions regarding the ISA please visit the website of PISA ( and/or ACER ( or come and see Ms Lisa.

Your Sincerely,

Miss Lisa Hughes
