Literacy and division

Dear families,

Hello. How are you? Look at how time flies! We are now in our fifth unit before inquiring into our last unit. The students are still engaged and enjoy inquiring into properties of materials and how they can use them to construct something in the real life. There have been a lot of experiments going on in this unit. They used a science journal to note down all their questions, hypothesis and results based on the procedural text type.

We have started exploring division using two books:

-One Hungry Cat by Joanne Rocklin

-The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins

The students inquired into ways to display the division concepts found in the stories and presented them to class. It was interesting to see how they use the concepts of array, number, subtraction and multiplication when showing their understanding of the story. One pair even used props and voice modulation when sharing their ideas. They all learned from each other about division. They enjoyed using stories as a way to learn math. Below are some of the photos showing their ideas and presentation.

I will end with a quote from Thomas Jefferson:

“reason and free inquiry are the only effectual agents against error”

I hope the children will continue to have inquiring and wondering minds as they will learn many new concepts.

Take care.

Pushpa & Thao
